Getting to the Claverton Down campus by bike or on foot.
Travelling to campus during COVID-19 restrictions
While COVID-19 restrictions are in place, please think carefully about whether you need to come to campus.
If you do need to come to campus, walk or cycle if you can.
Routes to campus
You can walk or bike from the centre of Bath using:
- North Road
- Bathwick Hill
- Widcombe Hill
These routes involve a steep uphill climb. It will take 30 to 40 minutes to walk to campus.
Walk or bike from the east of Bath to campus using:
- Claverton Down Road
- The Avenue / Claverton Hill (steep uphill climb)
Walking routes across the city
The University and Bath and North East Somerset Council set up the Walking Network. This is a series of scenic and accessible routes that link the campus with locations around the city.
There are four routes that cross the city, each one passing the campus.
The National Trust, Bath Skyline walk is a longer but more scenic route between the University and the city centre.
Public rights of way
There are routes, off the main roads, used by people biking or walking to campus. If you use these, you must check that you have a legal right of way.
Use this Ordnance Survey map to view public rights of way.
You can park your bike in secure storage and bike shelters on and off-campus.
There are showers available on several locations across campus and in the Virgil Building.
There is a drying room in 4ES 1.11 equipped with drying racks and a dehumidifier.
A bicycle repair kit is available from the Security desk in the Library. It includes a pump, lubricants, and tools.
If you are a member of staff or a postgraduate student at the University of Bath, you can hire an electric bicycle for free for up to two weeks. An e-bike is great to help you get up the hills, or for a longer commute.

If you're a member of staff, you can use the salary sacrifice scheme to buy a bike, saving tax and national insurance.
There are also loans available, to buy a bike.
As a student, you can hire a bike for free from the Students’ Union.
